BBB Silver Sleuths
Volunteer Positions
Some of the activities that Sleuths may perform include:

Advertisement Inspectors – Inspect and monitor local community newspapers, television, radio, billboards and flyers for suspicious advertisements.

Private Eye Trainer – Help train other Sleuths on how to report deceptive advertising, fraudulent mail solicitation, charity scams, sweepstakes promotions, telemarketing fraud, landscaping and home improvement schemes.

Troubleshooter – Help facilitate communication between businesses and consumers through mediation. Empower people to settle their differences before it goes to court.

Undercover Sleuth – Review consumer complaints against local businesses and report findings to the BBB.

Mystery Shopper – For the die-hard shopper, this is an opportunity to validate advertised specials and sales and report findings to the BBB.

Neighborhood Scout – Pass out information to your friends and neighbors and scout your neighborhood for local scams and rip-off artist and help identify older adults in need of social services.

Sleuth Reporter – Be the reporter for the Silver Sleuths by writing and developing a monthly newsletter, consumer pamphlets, and training information.

Special Hotline Agent – Help be the personal voice of the Silver Sleuths by answering consumer calls.

Ombudsman – Offer a listening ear and personal attention to older consumers who want to file a complaint against a business.

Computer/Data Control Examiner – Input and update business and complaint information on the BBB computer system.

Information Bloodhound – Pursue and develop information and referral sources that help older adults in your community.

Special Event Operatives – Help with special projects for the BBB, including the Consumer Resource Magazine and the annual Houston Awards for Excellence. Be the public voice of the Silver Sleuths by making presentations at home shows, consumer fairs, and seminars.

There are many other volunteer opportunities available. You can undertake assignments on a time schedule convenient to you.
